welcome to puffin-a-go-go, a self-indulgent forum that allows me to pollute the retina and/or brain of whoever wishes to gaze upon it.
my name is paul and i live in lousiville, ky. i was born in 1974 (oh yes, what a year it was folks) in said city, grew up in elizabethtown (suburban hell), and graduated from murray state university (small town hell). i work in an office (occupational hell), but try not to let that define who i am (those bright lights and ringing phones make it hard). my greatest love is writing and playing music, unfortunately i own only the finest in crappy equipment.
i also go by the name puffin (or the puffin), hence the title of the page. the title was placed upon me by a dear, yet extremely vocal friend from college. apparently, my nose appears to be somewhat larger and hookish compared to most people's snouts. the name stuck, i don't mind (it beats the hell out of being called jackass for the rest of your life).
if anyone has any comments or questions about anything i have to say, feel free to e-mail me.

diggin' up bones

after months of ignoring my playstation (hey, brian's got a playstation 2, come on!), i've finally traded in some old games, and got a new game that allows me to avoid the winter winds. for some reason or another, i'm a big fan of the tomb raider series of games. they're a good combination of action game and puzzle solving. plus eidos sure does pack alot of gameplay on one disc. and hello! the main character is a really hot, really smart, chick (or as jim "mitzi" kuczun calls the game: womb raider).

i've been kind of reclusive for the last couple of days. i've been invited on several occasions by matt and brian to go hang out, but i haven't really felt up to it. i've been a little low on cash and i hate cold weather (and it's amazing how 25 extra pounds can keep a skinny man so much warmer). i making sure to go out tomorrow night, though. can't let lara croft take over my brain.

an today's crazy site is brought to you by my homeboy dennis ("i'm in the...garage, dennis...with one of the...kids from hanson") in san fran. it's called bullseyeart, and it's full of crazy flash cartoons. enjoy.

you...could be in...great danger

looks like brian had quite the productive day. i guess he's just resting up for his trip to chicago. i hope he doesn't get snowed in up there(unless, of course, he wants to). my roommate, frank, is flying out to san francisco, tomorrow with his girlfriend. i tackfully suggested that they make an attempt at becoming members of the mile high club (wink-wink). frank complained that the bathrooms on airplanes were too small, so he's just going to bring a large jacket ("sir, could you please extinguish your cigarette and promptly dismount your companion. thank you.")

speaking of san fran, my ol' cure buddy, dennis, called me this evening. he's been there only six months and he's already changing schools. he played some wonderful jay morr as christopher "damothafuckinman" walken recordings he downloaded from napster of all places. fun was had by all.

i'm currently listening to the last firewater cd: the ponzi scheme. they're due for a new one. until then, they do have a couple newer songs at their site. the bio page is great, every other word is a link to some other crazy site. enjoy.

"i saved latin"

one of my roommates rented rushmore on dvd last night. i hadn't watched it since i saw in the theaters about two years ago. this time i was able to see certain common themes it shares with the other anderson/wilson classic: bottle rocket. one theme is that friendships, though at times can be strained, endure if the are really worth anything. both movies' central character's have aspirations of doing, what is in their minds, great achievements. oh, then there's this thing about foreign women, but we won't get into that. i highly recommend both movies if you haven't seen them yet (if you already have, go rent them again, now!). they are beautifully shot, hilarious (bill murray is da man), and inspiring. and bottle rocket is the only time you'll see owen wilson in a good movie.

so if she calls herself one, is it a good thing?

i spent a huge chunk of the evening slowly getting a bit plastered with brax and matt at our favorite local (and soon to be closed) bar. matt gets back into town from visiting his family, and within two hours we've got him in a bar drowning in draft. an interesting part of the evening occured when some underage girl we knew snuck in somehow and started to chat with us. her parting comment was something to the effect of, "oh, i'm a slut. (giggle, giggle, giggle)" and she walks off. i for one don't know what provoked such a statement of self-analysis. it's not the most low key form of getting some action, but hey, if it works, then who am i to judge.

brian decided to stay home last night. i guess he's just anxious about his trip up north. speaking of up north, nanette actually has puffin a go-go as a link on amplified. so a good and gracious thanks to the angel of the windy city. i am slowly spreading, not unlike a virus.

cheers.

scribble on wood

and the louisville weblog army grows yet again! i just took a sneak peek at "paint on glass", a new site, soon to be available to all by guy "bacdafucup" kelly. i'm not going to link it today, coz i don't think it's ready for world release yet. guy is awsome (hide your daughters, ladies!). another cool thing is that his site looks like it will be quite expansive in due time (note to self: time to start adding all the bells and whistles to the a-go-go). the kid will probably show all our lame arses up. so when guy gives the word, i'll link it for all you boys and girls. (hey, guy weren't pogs those round pieces of cardboard with pictures on them little kids collected for about 2 weeks back in 1995?)

i caught two episodes of the new x-men:evolution cartoon this morning. it actually is not bad at all. the animation is great and the take on the x-men concept and characters is interesting (most of the x-men and villians are teenagers on the show). and hey, it's got nightcrawler on it, my favorite character of all time.

got an e-mail from matt, today. he says that he'll be hitting the road as soon as he wakes up today. so that translates to about 4:27 pm, monday.

cheers, mates.

unfuckwithable

last night, brian and i went and saw unbreakable. boy, did it really stink. i don't want to go into many details, since the director (he did that sixth sense movie) likes to throw in those suprise endings. let's just say that instead of bringing more awareness to the medium of graphic storytelling (comic books), mr. m. night may have provided for a step back in the mainstream acceptance of a genre i simply adore. plus, the pacing was way slow and the symbolism was obvious and forced. the idea was cool and an original take on the subject of super powers, but... go see it for yourself, and judge. my opinion may be clouded.

for those who may not be totally aware, your average comic book readers do not lack in social skills and good looks. we do not talk about sci-fi all the time (unless it's geeky wednesday, yo!). we get drunk and fuck with the best of them. we just really enjoy another form entertainment that appeals to use as artistic stimuli (both visually and written). go watch chasing amy now.

finally got the blur best of. the limited edition version comes with a ten track live disc. apparently, the show that was recorded was one of the big 10 year anniversary shows, complete with a horn section and gospel choir. if you are even remotely interested in blur, this collection is a good start. it's got 18 great songs that cover their career in the '90s. if you don't want to commit the money, than check out the blur radio at their site (unfortunately, it's done on ms media player, sorry apple users).

i've gone a bit long winded. i guess i'm trying to make up for lost posts from last week.

cheers.

family

i went down to e-town today to visit the family for thanksgiving. my sister, beth and her husband rod were there; it's always good to see them. my other little sister, kim was off with her husband, stewart, visiting his family. his family is really, cool: their all scots (kim and stewart's wedding was fun and full of drinking). mom cooked quite a feast. i packed in much more food this year compared to those in the past (i guess that's what happens when you pick up 25 extra pounds!). i went out of my way to avoid any political discussions for the sake of a comfortable family dinner. i'm a big lefty, and everyone else is a moderate righty. i came home during the early evening so i could spend time with some of the members of my other family. you know, that kind of people you aren't related to through blood, but are just as important (sometimes more).

turkey... taking hold... sleepy... must stay... awake... zzzzzzzzz.

"back to save the universe"

well, i hope this is going to work. blogger has been a real bastard to me. yesterday, i spent three hours trying to fucking post. this may, or may not get through.

bought the x-men dvd tonight. it's pretty cool. however, it doesn't have as much extras as i thought it would.

tomorrow, i will travel down to e-town and visit mom and pop. there should be food a plenty. we were going to do the thanksgiving thing at churchill downs, but pop hurt his back. it would have been quite a catholic event: food, drinking and betting on the ponies.

matt went home to see the folks. i hope those reaganites don't kill him
.
anyways, enjoy the white man's feast of oppressive victory.
(p.s. been drinkin' so mind the typos)

"last time on..."

i haven't posted since thursday, so i apologize to anyone that may be a regular of the a-go-go. blogger has been a real bastard, lately. according to bri, and his communications with the relative parties involved, things should, hopefully, clear up. another problem has been occuring with our server. the details have not been given to me. and, finally, nothing really exciting happened to me this weekend, so i didn't feel compulsed to update. funny how activity is relative to the balance of my bank account.

not so optimistic

so i sat down to watch the radiohead performance on mtv last night and it went like this: "the national anthem", five minutes of commercials, "how to disappear completely", five minutes of commercials, "idioteque" and "optimistic", end. the freakin' thing was only twenty minutes long (minus the commercials)! it was almost a waste of time. i guess mtv couldn't take too much time from reruns of road rules and trl! come on, mtv actually used to be about music. vh1, though they don't really show any videos anymore, at least has televises shows about music. much music shows videos 24/7, and they're freakin' canadian! half the time it's a band you've hardly even heard of, and that's great. u.s. radio is too afraid to take risks or offer any exposure to new or seldom heard bands. it's too busy giving hand-jobs to the advertisers. i think i'm going to move to england where they have something that may resemble taste.

i know matt isn't going to change his dad's mind with their bush/nader debate, but hopefully, monroe will come to understand matt's views like my mother (she voted for bush) came to respect mine. nader, 2004!!!

in closing, i don't have any crushes, ... just restraining orders.

geeky wednesday

had to stay late at work today. this is quite common for me on wednesday. it's my headache day. i need a new job, like bad.

but today is the day when my inner geek is quite satisfied. new comics come out and voyager comes on. as soon as i'm done updating the go-go, i will begin to tape up the bridge of my glasses and break out the trusty pocket protector.

tonight, on mtv, they're supposed to have a radiohead special. live performances and shit. imagine, music on mtv. i'm going to try to tape it; i'm sure bri would like to see it.

the cockroach lives

"the cockroach lives" was my mother's answer to whether or not my grandfather, her father, had made it through his by-pass surgery. now some of you out there may find such a statement from a daughter about her father in such dire health as insensitive, but you don't understand my gramps. in the last twenty years, he has had about three strokes and about two heartattacks. as a result, everytime he goes down, it's as common as the olympics. of course, he becomes a bit slower in his daily activity, but that doesn't keep him away from the big macs. ol' robert, he laughs at death! in addition to genes that will survive any orbital nuclear attack, my mother's maternal grandmother is actually 113. no shit! my mother will probably outlive me. hopefully, i will inherit said genes as well as that side of the family's hairline.

i will go on record to state that i am pleased with the direction the x-files has taken this season. after seven seasons, it needed some new life breathed into it, or to just end. i guess i'm just happy to get my weekly dose of gillian anderson.

due to her new album, i've been listening to a lot of p j harvey lately. "songs from the city..." definitely rocks. it is easily in my top five of the year. i'll probably post that sometime at the end of the year; it's an odd little tradition this music geek has. hell, i'll probably post reviews of all the records that i bought that came out this year. it's my page, i'll do what i want.

long live the cockroach!

following the arrow

thank god the ballots in louisville were somewhat less confusing than say... west palm beach. hey, i can see both sides of this heated arguement, but when ol' patty of the reform party walks away with 30% of the vote down there, somethings up. he even said that it was impossible. as expected snl had some extremely funny takes on the election. the gore/bush "odd couple" take was especially hilarious. calista flockhart actually did a pretty decent job. its always good when they get a host that really makes an effort and has fun. next week is tom green is hosting. that should be quite interesting. oh, ah ricky martin sang on the show... he really sucks.

apparently, mr. rasnake got to have a 25 minute conversation with the man, the myth, the ledgend: mark "mothafuckin'" arm! it's also good to know that you can get a 40 oz. of mickey's in chicago. hopefully, the boys will be back in time for the x-files tonight.

if you're bored and have flash and are a radiohead fan, check the game out on this site.

kindly remove this ice pick stuck in my temple, please

my head hurts. as i mentioned last night, brax and i got our drink on. i forgot to eat something or drink some water before i went to bed, resulting in a not so pleasant hangover. we hit a couple of bars, drank and talked. i got into a brief conversation with some chick at the jukebox, which was fine and fun, until she went back to her table that unfortunately had a guy attached to it. brax and i both agreed to keep it low key tonight. so no booze, just some snl (i can't wait to see their take on the election).

well, we got word via bipolar, that the boys are alive and well. apparently matty got his picture taken with his hero, mark arm. so the trip was obviously worth it.

enough for now. the screen is giving me a headache

in comes the cold

damn. it sure did get cool all of the sudden. all day it felt like i was walking through a cloud; all mist and gray.

got real paid today and went to da record store, dig? finally got the p j harvey album "stories from the city, stories from the sea". from what i've listened, so far, it's another record with its own distinct sound, yet decidedly still very polly jean. back to playing the guitar, yet the songs are cleaner and more up beat. "kamikaze" sounds very "rid of me" era. thom yorke makes an appearance on three songs (mainly backing vox on two tracks). lots of new york references.

unfortunately, the blur best of is not out yet. i really want to get the special edition version for the extra disc with a bunch of live tracks. the special editions of "13" came with a bunch of cd rom shit. i guess this means i get to hold on to my money a bit longer.

like i said yesterday, matt and brian are on their way to chicago. they may have to sell their plasma just to get enough cash for the trip back. if i don't hear from them by tuesday, i guess i'm gonna have to go a lookin'. (note to self: keep emergency bail money handy)

time to go find brax and go get a drink on.

and the clouds came rollin' in

unlike brian, my place of employment doesn't give a shit if a potential tornado comes rolling on through. then again, it didn't seem that bad until i got home. all day it looked like 5:30 pm outside. i sat at my desk waiting for the rain, not unlike a person waiting to get punched in the face.

matt and brian are going to chicago tomorrow. i can't go for two reasons: i'm broke and they're leaving early. due to a lack of funds, i cannot afford to take a day off from the job. i wouldn't consider myself a monkeywrench fan (though i have grown quite fond of mudhoney) i enjoy their stuff and would probably have a good time. i guess my biggest problem with this upcoming weekend is that my posse won't be in effect, dig? so my hangout (drinking partner) options become few. anyway, i hope they have a kickass time, yo.

at least this weekend will afford me a paycheck that will (after bills) be able to be spent. i can get my comics and buy the new p j harvey and blur albums. no canned ravioli this weekend, no sir!

i'll be waiting with a gun and a sack of hushpuppies.

to whom it may concern...
finally, puffin-a-go-go is finally a-go-go. thanks to matt and brian for their help, and thanks to matt for putting himself through html hell to get this little monster up and running. hopefully, it will be worth all the trouble.

hey, how about that election. one thing's for sure, my candidate lost. love me, hate me, but i voted for someone i actually believed in: ralph nader. fuck all the bullshit about stealing al gore's votes, one of the reasons this country is so screwed up socialogically and politically is that people don't vote for what they think is right. i got really tired with the whole "i'd vote for nader, if the race wasn't so close" excuse. if people weren't so afraid of taking a few lumps for the greater good of building something that could make a difference, we might have people willing to work for us to keep the right wing at bay.

sorry to pour a whole lot of darkside on your collective asses, but the subject is pretty current and important.

ah... blur. :) i'm currently listening to the wonderful blur radio that is accessable through their site. the link is already in the go-go to section. the show currently running is a run through of the songs on their new best of album smattered with commentary. if you're only familiar with song 2, you're not even close to scratching the surface of their ability. 13 (1999) would be appreciated by those who loved radiohead's kid a.

well, time to see if this actually worked.

later.
